SFC license, How and Why

How Do You Get an SFC License?

Before you get an SFC license, you must have a functional Preventive Control Program in place. A well-written preventive control program will not only get you an SFC license but also GFSI certifications that will grant your business a competitive edge.
In addition to having a Preventive Control Program, the requirements for having an SFC license include Traceability and Consumer Protection requirements.

Who needs SFC License?

Under the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations, you need to have a valid SFC license if you:

Import food into Canada

Manufacture, process, treat, preserve, grade, package, or label food to be sent or conveyed from one Canadian province to another

Slaughter food animals for the purpose of sending or conveying the meat products from one Canadian province to another

Use federal grade for your provincial or territorial business.

You may also need to acquire a SFC license for your provincial or territorial business if your provincial or territorial regulations require you to obtain one. As an importer, you must input your SFC license number in your import declaration declaration to avoid seizure at the port of entry.
